Cuomo Governor February 12, 1995 Dear Jim: Thank you for sharing with me the results of your impressive efforts to capture both the pre-presidential and the presidential Lincoln in bronze sculpture. Let me compliment you on the statuettes-- they are true to life and uncannily evocative of both periods of the subject's life. I can't imagine a more daunting challenge than that of capturing for a modern audience the image of a man who has become a national icon-- whose face is already more familiar than that of any other historical figure-- and who can hold meaning for audiences today as diverse as the imposing image at Mt. Rushmore and the homey profile in the Lincoln penny. Yet you have managed to create altogether new images of Lincoln through your very clever combination of artistic media, and I think that as a result, your work should elicit a warm response from both the community of Lincoln scholars and the general public. I wish you every good luck with your project. Sincerely,
Mario M. Cuomo
