Front side (obverse) 4 inch bronze Bicentennial medallion
The
relief depicts a beardless attorney Abraham Lincoln in a
classic Greek
and Roman pose with a full side profile of the head. The sculpture attempts
to show
Mr.
Lincoln as a well groomed, robust, and confident attorney and
candidate with a firm
resolve and a clear vision of the future. This Lincoln
medallion depiction is a strong and
powerful image for the Lincoln
bicentennial. The front side
of
the Lincoln Medallion will bear the words,
"Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial
1809-2009"the
patina shown in the
photograph is similar to the final patina
which
will appear on the medallion.

Reverse
Side 4 inch bronze bicentennial medallion
The
reverse side is shown still in a rough clay form and will develop more
subtle
character as the sculpture is completed and refined. When cast it
will
have the same patina as the obverse side. The words around the
circumference
are for size reference only and the final medallion will bear
a
quote by Abraham Lincoln. The pose is classic three quarter head pose
also
used extensively in ancient Greek and Roman relief sculpture. The
sculpture
attempts to show a more haggard and worn President Lincoln
who
has lost 25 pounds from the pressures of his office and the civil war.
The
noticeable differences in appearance from Lincoln's days as an
attorney
and those final days as president make an evocative subject for
a
two headed medallion. If you are interested in reserving an early edition
number
of this medallion, please contact James
Nance.

History
of the 4 inch bronze medallion
There
is a great deal of difference between a true sculptural relief medallion,
which is a work of art, and a modern, mass produced, commercially
etched
coin. The 4 inch portrait medallion was first developed in Italy in 1436
and has enjoyed immense popularity ever since. The size is large enough
to
allow a detailed portrait sculpture yet small enough to be intimate and
personal. Originally medallions were worn on ribbons or chains around
the
neck
as the Olympic medallion is today. However, today medallions are more
cherished as works of art and are typically displayed in a display box
on
a
desk or curio cabinet. Commissioned by royalty or wealthy clients,
medallions were typically given to friends and associates to commemorate an
important
event in the life of the person or the nation. Usually medallions
depicted a head on the front (obverse) side and a figure, architectural
design,
or
allegorical image on the reverse. In more modern times medallions are still
used to commemorate an event but have evolved as works of art to tell a
story
between the two sides. This Abraham Lincoln bicentennial medallion is designed to be an investment as
well as a valued collectable.
